Haymarket Books is proud to present the next installment in our community film series: Films for a Changing World. We envision this community film series to be a place for people to come together in community during this volatile political moment. In times like these, our struggle to change the world can feel even more difficult to sustain and we hope these events will be a space to share a collective cultural experience and connect with one another.

Join us Thursday, February 19th at 6 PM for a screening of Jamie Coughlin Silverman and Gabriel Silverman's 2025 documentary The Spies Among Us. The film will be followed by a discussion led by members of Lucy Parsons Labs. Proceeds from ticket sale donations will go towards supporting the work of Lucy Parsons Labs and refreshments will be served.

About the film:

THE SPIES AMONG US is a rare look into the inner workings of a data-driven surveillance state run by one of the most feared secret police forces the world has ever known – East Germany’s Stasi. A personal investigation into family secrets by Peter Keup, a Stasi victim-turned-historian, takes a turn when he contacts the men who ran the system. These are the first dialogues between Stasi officers and a victim ever recorded. Through these encounters a terrifying mosaic is built of the lengths people go to maintain power in a dictatorship, as well as the indomitable human spirit that seeks truth and self-determination.

Note: For those observing Ramadan, Iftar and Maghreb accommodations will be provided as well as halal food options.

***We ask that all attendees wear masks in the event space during the program for the health and well-being of the speakers and other guests. Here is more information about parking and building accessibility. ***
