Footprints: A Black Journalist's Fight Against Apartheid in South Africa and in Exile

Join Gary Younge, Liz Morrison, Atiha Sen Gupta and Francis Beckett at the Frontline Club in London on 11 June for the launch of Footprints, a memoir from South African journalist and first Black President of the National Union of Journalists Lionel Morrison.

Footprints: A Black Journalist's Fight Against Apartheid in South Africa and in Exile, written by Lionel Morrison and completed by his wife Liz following Lionel’s death, tells the story of the struggle for freedom in South Africa and beyond, revealing the intimate experience of grand geopolitical shifts.

Tried alongside Nelson Mandela and Walter Sisulu, imprisoned under the apartheid regime before fleeing to Britain in exile, Morrison worked as a journalist on the ground during major flashpoints in the heyday of the Non-Aligned Movement and 20th Century Pan-Africanism, from Nkrumah’s Ghana to the 1965 coup in Indonesia and the Cultural Revolution in China. Later, he fought for fair housing in London, ethical journalism, and would become the first Black president of the National Union of Journalists.

In this discussion, speakers will reflect on lessons from Lionel’s life, and the state of anti-racism today in journalism, housing, and beyond.
