Join us Friday, August 28th for an intergenerational dialogue with Kipp Dawson facilitated by her daughter Leah Yacknin-Dawson. The pop-up will remain on display through 3PM during the Radical Used Book Fair Saturday, August 29.
Feminist, lesbian, and socialist, Kipp Dawson has built and maintained coalitions for over 60 years across causes ranging from queer liberation to the labor movement to anti-imperialist causes. This radical pop-up features material from her decades as an activist, coal miner, and labor organizer in some of the largest international and domestic movements for freedom and justice. Spotlighting material from her work building union solidarity networks between workers in El Salvador, Australia, the UK, and the US, bridging gay liberation and socialism, and using tools of solidarity and organizing to resist US militarization abroad and racial violence at home, this pop-up urges us all to seek unlikely alliances, break down barriers, and work towards a better future for all. As “Solidarity Forever” shows, in Kipp’s own words, “There is beauty in struggling together.”
Kipp Dawson is a lifelong radical and activist. She co-planned the second Christopher Street Liberation Day celebrations following Stonewall, participated in the first and second Congress to Unite Women, and ran as the Socialist Workers Party candidate for Senate in New York. For 13 years, she worked as a coal miner in Appalachia, helping to organize women miners and international solidarity among laborers in El Salvador, England, and Australia. At 81, she continues to show up for a range of causes, building intergenerational coalitions along the way.
Leah Yacknin-Dawson is a writer and poet from Pittsburgh, PA. She works at Tzedek Chicago. In the summer, she is probably at the lake.
